Tree service for Grande Dunes and the north end — big oaks, big houses, city rules
Twenty-two hundred acres between the Waterway and the ocean, the Dunes Club and Arcadian Shores: the biggest live oaks in the city over the biggest houses, under the strictest ordinance on the Strand and an HOA that reads it.
The north end of Myrtle Beach runs from the Dunes Club and Pine Lakes' northern neighbors up through Grande Dunes — 2,200 acres between the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean, with the Members Club, the Marina and the Waterway lots — to Arcadian Shores and Kingston Plantation at the city line. It's the part of the city where the lots are big enough to have kept their live oaks and the houses are big enough to sit under them, which makes it the part of the city where the landmark-tree ordinance matters most: every live oak here over 25 inches is a landmark, every one over four inches is significant, and the Grande Dunes architectural committees review tree work on top of the city permit. On the Waterway side the lots have the deep lots and the tall pines; on the ocean side it's palmettos, Canary dates and the salt wind.
So our work in Grande Dunes is mostly preservation and paperwork: deadwooding and weight-reducing the big oaks over the roofs on a three-to-five-year cycle, raising canopies off the tile and the pool enclosures, cleaning the palms before the season, and — when a tree has to go — writing the arborist documentation the city requires for a landmark, filing the permit and the HOA request together, and lifting it out by crane over the house because there's no drop zone on a Waterway lot. We know the city's tree compliance officer by name and the HOA's submittal calendar by heart.

Questions from Grande Dunes & Arcadian Shores homeowners
My HOA says I need their approval and the city says I need a permit. Which first?
Both, and they want the same arborist report. We write it once, file the city permit, and submit the HOA package with the permit number. Grande Dunes' committees generally won't approve what the city hasn't.
Can a live oak over my roof be reduced without a permit?
Pruning to the standard doesn't need a city permit in Myrtle Beach — topping, stubbing or lopping a protected tree does, because the ordinance counts it as removal. We prune to ANSI A300 and document it.
How do you get a tree out from a Waterway lot?
By crane from the street, over the house, in sections. A 40-ton crane with a 100-foot boom reaches most back yards here; deeper lots take a bigger crane.
What does a landmark oak removal cost?
If it qualifies — hazardous or declining per our arborist — the removal is $2,500–$6,000 by crane, plus the city's mitigation (replacement trees or $400 each). If it doesn't qualify, we'll tell you, and prune instead.
